I use a lot of different ones. I start with hard pastels-Nu-pastels, then softer ones-Farber,Rembrant,Girualt and Sinular , Diane Townsen

wow so many brands o.O i actually start off with soft pastels to block in the colours then work on the minute details at the very end

Try starting with hard pastels because you can go over them easier. you can still use the hard if you need at the end.

for my method of art-making, i dont find it necessary to begin with hard pastels cos i dont work in small sections like many photorealists do. but thanks for suggesting anyway :D
